Organizing the Absent-Minded Professor, Session 3-3

Professors are among the potential client base of nearly every professional organizer. This session is geared to those who work with scattered, intelligent creatives, or those who want to explore expanding their business to the higher education market. It is intended to inspire my colleagues to work with professors (and not be intimidated by them) by understanding their challenges, how transfer of organizing skills can benefit this under-served group, categories and tools particularly useful in this setting, and ways to reach out and engage with the higher-education market.

  • Describe the organizing challenges faced by professors at different career stages Identify the ideal zones of an on-campus office, the four major filing categories all professors need, and at least three time-management strategies to discuss with faculty clients
  • Describe at least three marketing tactics for connecting with individual faculty (for hands-on organizing) and their institutions (for paid speaking opportunities)

Trained in archaeology (the art of interpreting broken buildings and 2000-year-old clutter), former professor Melanie Sobocinski thoroughly enjoys exploring how clients use their space and stuff. As a productivity coach for professors, Melanie now works with clients who seek to optimize their routines and surroundings.
