Bridging the ADHD Spousal Communication Gap Through Organization - NAPO 2017 After attending this session, participants will learn 4 main things: 1 – The differences in organizing styles of ADHD versus neuro-typical people. 2 – Communication strategies to help your clients function better as a couple. 3 – Solutions to organize an ADHD-friendly home that neuro-typical people can live with. 4 – Strategies to help the ADHD spouse with task accomplishment and time management. Part lecture and using case studies, this interactive session will expose the significant negative impact that ADHD has on marriage when it is not decoded for the other spouse. The communication differences will be discussed along with strategies to help close this gap. ADHD thought & sensory processing styles will explain why home organization is different & lifestyle changes adapted. I will share my own experience in having ADHD and being in a relationship with the same spouse for over 20 years. Participants can share their client cases to help them get solutions specific to their problem. Despite their best intentions to organize their ADHD spouse, the neuro-typical partner who is unaware of the organizing techniques required for ADHD people, ends up making the ADHD partner feel like the problem in the relationship, often accusing them of being careless or lazy. The ADHD spouse often shuts down or avoids confrontation, leading to eventual divorce. Professional organizers who will be able to help their clients at this level will make the industry seem more than just a cleaning up service for hoarders or seekers of perfection.
