With organizer’s help, sewing enthusiast stitches together a home organization plan

Diane Simpson dreaded going into her scrap-booking and sewing rooms. The places that had once brought the nimble-fingered embroiderer so much joy had come to generate feelings of distress. “I had gotten to where I didn’t want to go in either room to do anything because I couldn’t find anything,” said Simpson, an executive assistant at Hewlett Packard. “I had tried myself to get things organized. I’d get in there and start moving a few things around and get overwhelmed with the stuff and the mess.”

NAPO Professional Organizer to the Rescue

In time, Simpson reached a point where she could not deal with the clutter anymore.
After watching television programs and seeing organizers work their magic in messy garages, she thought that perhaps there was hope for her two craft rooms too. Her white knight came in the form of a local member of the National Association of Professional Organizers.

After only two days, Simpson’s rooms went from chaos to categorized. “I was just so amazed. Everything has a place,” she said. “I know where everything is. I can find everything.”

The organizer positioned shelves and containers throughout the rooms and used them to hold various items, including Simpson’s collection of craft embellishments. “For an organizer it really doesn’t matter what the project is,” the NAPO member said. “You have to ask the right questions and understand what the deliverables are going to be. What is the finished solution supposed to look like?”

With Simpson, as with other clients that call on professional organizers for help, the NAPO member becomes the “project manager” to ensure that the customer receives the desired result. “For Diane, it was to get those craft rooms looking the way she wanted,” the NAPO member said, adding, “to make those rooms a source of joy for her instead of pain.”
